Ready or not...Here he comes!

It was Thanksgiving night, we had just gotten home and got Max into bed, and at about 10:15 my contractions began.  I had been having contractions lately, but nothing that regulated out.  As soon as these contractions started I knew they were different.  I spent about 3 hours trying to convince myself that I was timing them wrong, or that I was being a wuss, and even that they'd stop "any time now".  Around 1:00am I used the restroom and was horrified at the amount of blood there was.  I woke Drew up, called my mom to come sit with Max, and we headed to the hospital to get checked out.  My contractions had been 3 minutes apart and they were increasing in intensity, but somehow I kept telling myself that they'd give me a shot to stop the labor and send me home.  We got to the hospital, got hooked up to the monitors, I had to get a freaking catheter (hated that), and the nurse did a cervical check.  I think we were all shocked when she told me I was a 4+ and 95% effaced.  I knew once she told me that, that we would be having this little guy today.  I was only 34 weeks though, I couldn't have him yet, it wasn't safe, I was terrified.

I just have to say that the timing of this was a divine intervention.  Literally, two days after my husband unexpectedly returned from deployment, I went into premature labor.  If I hadn't had him there, I do not know what I would have done.  He was so calm, he rubbed my back, he prayed with me, he told me everything would be okay, he even walked me to the bathroom every 15 minutes and held my frumpy hospital gown and my IV.

Dad getting some rest with the belly while we waited.  It was a long day for everyone.

Since I was still so early, Dr Allen tired all that he knew to try to stop my labor.  I was given three shots, an oral medication, and an IV of Magnesium.  None of them seemed to help much, clearly Hudson had his own plans. They slowed the progress of my labor, but the contractions continued.  By this point I had been admitted, and I was not going home even if they could stop the labor.  But the outcome wasn't looking great.  I was given a steroid injection that rapidly develops the baby's lungs, and they didn't want me to deliver until we had given that enough time to do some work on those tiny baby lungs.  At 11:30am I was a 6 and they gave me the go ahead to get my epidural.  I was so relieved after getting that.  I had had contractions every three minutes for 13 hours...I was miserable. At 3:00pm the doctor turned off the Magnesium and let my body do it's thing.  At 4:45 he broke my water, fifteen minutes and four pushes later Hudson Jonathan Blunt was born. 5.7lbs and 17in long. He had a headful of dark hair, his daddy's lips, and his mommy's nose.

I got to hold him for a brief moment after they made sure he was stable, before they took him to the NICU.

He was only 1in shorter than Max, but exactly 3lbs lighter.  He looked so small.

I have a friend who works in the NICU at Utah Valley, so I called her while I was in labor to find out what we should expect as far as the condition of our baby.  She told us that he'd probably be about 5 lbs, that his lungs weren't mature enough so he'd probably be in respiratory distress and put on C-PAP, that he may have trouble maintaining his body temp, and that he'd probably have to have a feeding tube until he was old enough to nurse.
When he was born, I remember hearing his quivering cry, and I was so happy because that meant he was breathing! Drew was able to cut his umbilical cord, and the look on this proud dad's face was priceless.  Drew went with the baby to make sure he was going to be okay while I finished up in labor and delivery.  Turns out it was a blessing that my contractions hadn't stopped because there was a placental abruption, which was the cause for all of the bleeding.

Hudson was taken to the NICU and assessed.  To everyone's surprise he wasn't showing any signs of respiratory distress, he was also maintaining his own body temperature, and the only problem he was having was that his blood sugar levels were too low.  They put an IV in and monitored him very closely.
It was several hours later that I was wheeled into the NICU to meet my baby boy, and it was such an overwhelming moment.  He was hooked up to tubes and wires, and he was swollen from the IV fluids he was receiving, but he was the most perfect little boy.

This was the first time I saw him after he was taken from the delivery room.  It was an awful feeling seeing him like this, and even more awful that there was nothing we could do for him.

I was able to hold him as they transported him to his new bed in the NICU.  I was one happy (and tired) mommy at this point.

The next morning we talked to the pediatrician taking care of him and got a run down of what to expect.  Chances were that he'd be in the NICU until his due date (Jan 1), they were inserting a feeding tube and for the time being I wasn't able to nurse him, and they would be doing some tests to determine the condition of his kidneys.  (At 20 and 28 weeks he showed dilated kidneys on his ultrasounds)
The ultrasound of his kidneys after delivery showed dilation on one side, and he will be sent home on an antibiotic to prevent urinary tract infections.  We will repeat the ultrasound when he is one month old and see if there is any improvement.

He was showing signs of jaundice a couple days after delivery, and he was put on lights for a short period of time.

His feedings have been/continue to be our biggest struggle.  He was only allowed non nutritive feedings for some time.  Once he mastered sucking, swallowing, and breathing we were given the go ahead to breastfeed him twice a day.  We had to do test weights before and after his feedings to determine of many ml's he was intaking.  We were moved up to 3 feeds a day, 4 feeds a day, 6 feeds a day, and then all 8 feeds.

It's tiring, and frustrating, and heartbreaking having to leave your child at the hospital.  It's against every motherly instinct to not be able to hold and feed and care for your child.  We are proud of him and the remarkable progress he has made thus far, and we are so appreciative to the nurses and doctors taking such exceptional care of him.

Thanksgiving

With Drew just getting home I found myself a bit emotional, as we have so much to be thankful for.  We talked to Max about the meaning of Thanksgiving and asked him what he was thankful for.  He has such a pure little heart.  He was thankful for Dad being home, for his soldier friends that weren't home yet, for his Mommy and Baby Hudson, and that he could feel Heavenly Father in his heart.
This Thanksgiving I am especially greatful that my husband is home and that he is able to experience the last part of this pregnancy with me.  I am thankful to be married to such a great man, for the power of the priesthood, and for the gospel.  I am thankful for my children, for the joy and unconditional love that they bring to my life.  I am greatful for family, friends, and neighbors who have stood by me and supported me through this last year.  I am grateful for modern technology, the power of repentance, laughter, and second chances.  On a lighter note, I am greatful for tums, crushed ice, netflix, holding hands, and smart cookies.
Dinner was at my parents this year, and we had Max the whole day. It was a bit chaotic because the whole fam damily was there, but as always we had a great time and everyone was thrilled to catch up with Drew. After dinner and some football, we headed up to Drew's Grandma and Grandpa Ely's for dessert.  The razzleberry pie was delicious, and Uncle Val provided all of the entertainment we needed.  I love sitting next to Kenna and hearing about her fascination with Twilight, as well as seeing how excited she is about baby Hudson.  She loves watching my belly and waiting for it to move.
It was a busy day, but one that I was so happy to be spending with my boys.  They are so sweet with each other, they both love mama with all of their hearts, and they both make me one happy woman.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I just have to share a couple photos from our Army Family in Afghanistan.  It brought tears to my eyes knowing that my husband should be sitting right next to these people.  We love you Pirates...can't wait until we are welcoming you home!

We miss you Auntie Binns!!!

Welcome Home Soldier

Tuesday November 20, I got a call from Drew telling me I could pick him up from the airport that evening at 8:55pm.  I knew that he was coming home, but really didn't have any idea when it would be.  I was absolutely shocked and could hardly think straight all day.
Because of the complications with the pregnancy, some really great people pulled some strings and made this possible. The rest of his unit will be home shortly.  It has been such a long, hard year but the minute that I saw my soldier walk out of that airport terminal... everything seemed okay, and every worry that I had disappeared.
I was curious how Max would respond to Daddy Drew being home.  I knew he would either be shy and stand-off-ish, or he would be beyond excited and not let him out of his sight.  I am happy to say that he wasn't shy at all.  He didn't even wait for him to come to us, Max ran straight to him as soon as he saw him.  He jumped into his arms and didn't want to let go of him.
I was so emotional that I didn't even have words.  All I could do was stare at him, and kiss him, and breathe a giant sigh of relief that this was all over.  It was the greatest feeling in the world to be able to hold both him and Max in my arms, and to have us all together as a family.

Max was super excited about the signs that we made.  Too bad he is hiding behind his.

Waiting, waiting, waiting for him to walk out of the terminal.  I was so afraid that I was going to miss him, that I sent him a text and told him he couldn't come out yet.  I may have forgotten to text him back and tell him it was okay to come out though, so we waited for what seemed like forever.

He's HOME!!!

Max had to hug him first, and then he made sure he lead Dad right to Mom.

Hugging both of my boys

After he said hello to me and Max, he told me he had one more person he needed to say hello to...I lost it! I never thought that he would see me pregnant or feel our child move/kick.

Brian even managed to get the time off work to be there!

Alex was able to make it too.

My family was there

and both sides of his family.

And then we couldn't let go of each other :)

Here's the awesome sign we made for Uncle Brian to hold.

Max wanted to help with dad's bags, and get the heck out of there! He wanted to take dad home, and boy did he have a mouthful of stories to tell him on the way.

Drew was so shocked to see the baby belly and to feel him move, that he didn't want to take his hands off of it.

We would like to thank those of you who have been there to support us through this journey.  It's times like these that you find out who really is there for you, no matter what.  My family, especially my mom,  have been amazing.  I have some of the best friends Rachel, Gina, and Shannon who have been there for me, no matter what time it is.  My fellow army wives who have kept me going when I thought that I couldn't.  They have become some of my dearest friends throughout this deployment, and I am so greatful for all of those friendships that I have made.  And sweet little Max, who has kept me busy and happy and laughing no matter what. He has shown his mommy so much love and taken such good care of me.
But most importantly, I would like to thank my husband.  He was so far away, and yet he always knew what I needed from him, sometimes even before I did.  He is a strong man, a loving husband, an honorable soldier, and the best father to our children that I could ever hope for.  If we can make it though our first year of marriage being 7,200 miles apart, I have no doubt that we can make it through anything life has to throw at us.  I love you baby!

Baby Shower

Last weekend my bestest friend was kind enough to throw me a baby shower, and it was the most adorable baby shower I have ever seen! Who would have thought that mustaches and some plaid ribbon could be so fabulous? Thank you Rachel Byrd for all of your hard work, and for being my oldest and dearest friend.

The hot chocolate bar was perfect for the cold day we were having.

My mom and my sister were little bakers the night before, and these apples tasted as good as they looked.

As a little thank you treat we made white chocolate popcorn bags for everyone that came.

And these were the centerpieces

These ladies are some of the best friends a girl could have.  They have been there through thick and thin, and I am so lucky to have them.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone that came and for all of the generous gifts! This little boy was spoiled with a grundle of tiny outfits, diapers, blankets, and everything else we needed to finish up the nursery.

We are so grateful for the support and kindness that we are surrounded with.  We truly have the best family and friends around and we wouldn't have made it through the last year without you.  I am looking forward to meeting Hudson and having all three of my boys home with me.
We did forget to take pictures during the shower, so I don't have any pictures with my fam :( But I don't want them to feel forgotten.  They are my rocks (especially my mama) and I love them and appreciate all of their help.  Only 6 more weeks until the induction date!

Holy Belly!

I am carrying Hudson in my back and I often barely look pregnant, so when this happened...Max and Mama were a little bit concerned.

I was having the worst contractions and clearly the baby was not liking what was going on.  They only lasted an hour or so, and then he settled back on my bladder.
Only 8 more weeks until this fella will be here!

Pumpkin Party

Drew's grandparents had a little get together with the family.  We had pizza and carved pumpkins.  We were very, very excited to get out of the house and to see the family.

Grandma Denise helping Max carve his pumpkin.  This was after he convinced Grandpa Blake to clean the guts out of it.  He is most definitely my child, because he did NOT want to get his hands sticky and dirty.

Here is his finished ghost pumpkin

Max, Hunter, Kenna, and Grandma carving away.

Field Trip

Max is going to Country Loft Preschool again this year.  He is in Miss Tricia's class and goes three days a week.  He is doing so well and seems to really enjoy school.  I love picking him up and seeing what he has learned that day.  Now that I am not working I was able to go on a field trip with him... I am not sure who was more excited, Mommy or Max.

Here the engineer is giving them a tour of the fire engine.

The entire class at the Lehi Fire Station.
